How easy is it to relate to a character like Zach?
Graham Phillips: Well Zach is a kid who is in the midst of finding himself and figuring out what kind of role he has to play in protecting the family, what is he supposed to share and what is he supposed to keep secret. He’s in a much more difficult situation than a lot of teens are but at the same time what he’s going though mirrors what a lot of kids go through with divorce, people trying to butt into the family’s affairs, etc. But I think that in the third season he has found himself a bit more and I’ve found that I’m becoming more like him because I’m two years older than the character. So it’s bizarre seeing Zach go through a lot of the same things that I went through two years ago.

Ever since last May’s steamy elevator ride between Alicia and Will [Josh Charles], your TV mom has been incredibly secretive about her personal life. When do you think she’s going to start filling Zach and Grace in on what’s going on?
I think later in the season she’s going to start addressing a lot of the issues she’s been putting off. Throughout the season thus far she really hasn’t been as upfront with us as she used to be and I think that’s because she’s no longer the perfect role model, the title of the show. She’s the rebellious ex-wife and I think because of that she’s kind of afraid of these family meetings because for the first time she’s arguably in the wrong in her kids eyes. I think the first scene with Will [Josh Charles] was really funny because it’s just so awkward on his part, he’s trying to bond, be on the cool side with me and it just crashes and burns and it really sets up this great dynamic later in the season if he continues to come to the house and if they start seeing each other more, which I think he’s going to happen.

Fans have always had a sense that Zach was rooting for his parents to reconcile. Do you think the official introduction to Will cause him to rebel?
Zach has always wanted his parents to stay together and he’s always been on the side of his father on issues — somehow — and that was kind of just a naive child just wanting to have a father still in his life and not understanding why he can’t be with both of his parents. That said, as you might have seen in a recent episode, I have a talk with my dad [Peter] and he’s a little more candid with how he hurt my mom and the degree to which he hurt his mom and how he might have hurt her even more than she knows now. And I think that’s the first time that this idolized version of my father starts to deteriorate and the scene immediately after is me helping my mom with the dishes and asking if she thinks I’m like my dad and that’s sort of the beginning of me becoming more of a ‘Momma’s boy’ in the show. I think I start becoming less frustrated by her decisions and I start realizing that she’s a parent above everything else. She’s not just like a parent who’s making me do things just for the sake of giving rules, she’s a person and there comes a time in every kid’s life when they realize that their parents aren’t just perfect people, they’re just trying to find their way just like the kids are.

Having two such strong parental figures as he does, have you ever given much thought as to what parent he might choose to emulate more going forward?
Sort of like a Harry Potter/Voldemort thing going on with him and his father! I would say that he would like to be more like his mother in many ways. I think there are things that he likes about his father just by the way he carries himself and by his work ethic and how strong he is mentally, but now that he’s seen behind the curtain there’s a part of him that will always be fighting the urge to be like his dad in a lot of ways and so I’m interested to see how that dynamic plays out, that love/hate relationship with his father.

Based on scenes we were fortunate enough to just witness it appears that Zach’s next girlfriend [whose identity we're not about to spoil here!] may be the offspring of a character fans have already come to know and love. What can you tease about that?
I’ve played the first scene with her and it was kind of flirty, but the writers didn’t really tell us whether it was supposed to be flirty as if it was going somewhere or whether we were just intellectually sparring with each other. We were trying to play it both ways at the same time and I think it came out very well. It’s very funny that Zach seems to always have a new girl! I don’t think anyone really realizes this but Zach has had more relationships than anyone on the show. Well, except maybe Kalinda, but that’s never really shown. I think that sort of epitomizes his likeness to his father and I think that is one of the reasons why he asks his Mom in a recent episode if she thinks he’s like his Dad because his relationships do end really quickly.

Lastly, we can’t end this interview without asking about your on-screen sibling. Is there any chance you can shed some light on where Grace’s relationship with her tutor might be going?
Well, between you and me I’m very confused about it myself! It seems like Grace is possibly more confused about who she is than Zach. In the past two seasons she’s become some sort of Ethicist, a religious fanatic and now she’s hanging out with this rebellious sort of off-color street dancing physics tutor which is a very bizarre relationship and I think that it just sort of epitomizes how she is sort of taking in whatever she is hearing from whomever is around her and becoming that person. Which I see in so many other kids around me, that’s such a basic survival technique socially that kids use. Whatever anyone else is doing, do that, and you’ll be okay and I think that’s kind of what she’s doing.

Why? The arrival of Eli's ex-wife, Vanessa, played by Parker Posey, has a lot to do with it. It's no coincidence that the two actors have shared the screen several times before (most memorably in The Anniversary Party and Josie and the Pussycats) and Cumming immediately suggested Posey for the part. "I think Parker is the funniest person ever. I could just watch her walking on the street and think its fascinating. Everything she does, she brings such an idiosyncratic energy to It," he says. "She's hilarious in this. And there are also some really touching scenes in there."

Cumming says he is more than ready to explore and embrace a softer Eli, the colorful campaign manager-turned-crisis management expert who chewed out a colleague, did a victory dance in the copy room or (jokingly) dropped trou. "It's about time that emotion came out," he says. "We just shot one scene this week where you see Eli like you've never seen him before. He's not winning all the time and he's a bit battered, so I'm really intrigued by where that will go."

Cumming is enjoying Eli's new stability (minus the recent theft of Eli's favorite jellyfish paperweight by someone who Cumming suspects to be "dark forces"). Following Peter's re-election, Eli set up shop within Lockhart Gardner working on crisis management cases in between political campaigns. "Last season, I was mostly on location and I had never done a scene with Archie [Panjabi], I had just passed Josh [Charles] in the corridor. So it's been really fun to increase my acting partners," he says. "Also, it's nice to have a base and to know that when I do scenes in my office, that's my office. I had, like, five different offices in different locations last year so I feel much more focused."

However, Cumming probably shouldn't get too comfortable in his new digs. As evidenced by his recent push to snag Peter (Chris Noth) the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, Eli is determined to put Peter in the governor's mansion. "Next summer is when that keynote speech is going to take place, so I imagine the beginning of next year will see Eli back on the political path with Peter," he says.

The only thing standing in the way of that path is Alicia (Julianna Margulies). Eli promised a prominent politician that the Florricks would be together come convention time, so the question is what measures he will go to in order to bring the fragmented family back together. And will the man so used to winning big even be successful? "I have no doubt that Eli is setting himself up for a fall because he's so determined to make Peter into this great political phenomenon, and he needs Alicia to help him do that. He's kind of in denial about that fact," Cumming says. "I think that he's staked so much of his own reputation on that so I think he'll go as far as he can. That might mean manipulating Alicia to get what he wants. You never know, maybe Alicia and Peter will get back together."

"There's definitely a course to make that happen by whatever means."

How did you get started collecting guitars?
It started as I began to play more seriously when I lived in L.A. I took lessons with an incredible teacher named Fran Banish. He has many amazing guitars, is truly an aficionado, and really gave me the bug. My real passion is the blues, and the more I practiced, the more I wanted to play on the vintage guitars that the music was actually created on.

How do guitars fit in with the design aesthetics of your home? Do you have them out or keep them locked away?
When you walk into my living room, one of the first pieces you see is my National steel guitar, with its “frosted Duco” finish. It sits prominently out on a stand in the living room all year round. It’s both a work of art and a classic piece of blues history.

What do you look for in a guitar?
That vibe—that feel—that special something that isn’t always easy to articulate. I am particularly partial to the tone of vintage instruments, especially the Gibsons.

What was the first major purchase you made for your collection?
The factory-lefty 1938 Gibson L-00. I was dead set on that model being my first guitar and also determined to find one that was originally left-handed. I had no idea how impossible my search would prove to be, but at the time I was truly determined. I searched every day online, and after well over a year I found one at a vintage guitar shop near Osaka, Japan. I called them immediately, and, thankfully, one of the guys there spoke a little English, so we were able to make it happen. The search, the wait— it makes owning it that much sweeter.

What guitars are in your collection?
I have the 1938 Gibson L-00, a 1930 National Duolian steel guitar, and a factory-lefty 1957 Gibson Southern Jumbo.

Which is your favorite, and why?
I don’t really have a favorite. I love the V neck on the L-00, the raw nastiness of the Duolian, and the overall range of the SJ, but none more than the others. I will say, though, that the Southern Jumbo is the newest addition to the fold, so I’ve been playing it more than the others of late.

What guitar would be your dream purchase?
I really want a vintage parlor guitar with a decent-size scale. I’ve been talking to Tom Crandall over at Matt Umanov Guitars about which is the right one so I can commit the time and resources to fixing it up. But as with my very first purchase, waiting just kind of makes me appreciate owning all the more.

After two seasons of anticipation, Willicia supporters — as opposed to those who continue rooting for a reunion of Alicia and her estranged philandering politician hubby Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) — are finally being rewarded for their patience with a passionate payoff each week. The once dutiful spouse at the center of the drama has been transformed into a woman who giggles(!) and says yes to lunchtime lust with her fellow lawyer — but there's still plenty working against the fledgling couple. "What we like so very much about Will and Alicia is that there are so many reasons for the two of them not to be together, yet emotionally, it feels so right," says executive producer Michelle King, who along with husband Robert is responsible for the sophisticated CBS drama that earned nine Emmy nominations this year — along with a best-actress win for Margulies.

Among those reasons? First and foremost, Will is Alicia's boss at Lockhart & Gardner — and as far as the public knows, she's still living under the same roof as the powerful, newly reelected Cook County State's Attorney. "We want to explore the ramifications of sleeping with someone you work with — especially if that person is your supervisor," says Robert King. "On this show, that impacts the equilibrium of everybody around them. It doesn't just have a private component; it also has a political one." In other words: Cue the covert investigations, machinations, manipulations and confrontations that have become The Good Wife's hallmarks.

"Will and Alicia's relationship really works — when they're in their own little bubble," says Margulies with a laugh. That bubble is showing signs of bursting — thanks in no small part to the recent discovery of their romance by no-nonsense firm partner Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski). "Diane is in a state of extreme uneasiness about what is going on," says Baranski. "She is going to have to act decisively, and that could have a huge impact on personal relationships." From Diane's standpoint, Alicia is becoming a liability — and frankly, she's got a point.

As a direct result of Alicia kicking Peter to the curb, Lockhart & Gardner — currently under investigation by the now-squeaky-clean S.A.'s office — is more vulnerable than ever. Peter has long harbored suspicions about Alicia's feelings for her former flame, and the ongoing RICO (racketeering) case involving Will's gambling past gives him plenty to sink his teeth into. While the would-be future governor can chalk up the crusade to the pursuit of justice, "Peter is still human, and there's a slight sense he's manipulating things to make it harder for Lockhart & Gardner," says Robert King. "People who are trying to be ethical sometimes get what they want done anyway."

Will made his suspicions about Peter's possible ulterior motives clear in the November 6 episode, during a loaded confrontation that hinted at the clash that may be to come. "It was a great mano a mano scene," says Charles. "What was so interesting is that Will assumed that Peter knows about the affair, but he really doesn't." Make that yet: With Peter's meddling mother, Jackie (Mary Beth Peil), snooping around Alicia's apartment, that could quickly change.

As the task of keeping their status on the DL becomes more difficult by the moment — and the consequences keep piling up — in the November 13 episode, Will and Alicia will be forced to broach the big question: Is it all worth it? And, perhaps more important, if the answer is yes, do they even have what it takes to make it? "When the relationship was not possible, it was very easy for them to think, 'Alicia's the one,' or 'Will could be the one,'" says Michelle King. "Now, they're faced with a moment of truth: 'We could theoretically make this our future.'"

For established eligible bachelor Will, going the distance would require overcoming some serious Peter Pan tendencies. "Will is trying to figure out whether he can make room for commitment in his life," explains Robert King. Alicia is in no rush to play house again either, he says: "She is in the adolescence of a new relationship." Then there's the matter of her teenage children, Zach (Graham Phillips) and Grace (Makenzie Vega), who up until this point have been kept in the dark about their mom's extracurricular activities. "The second Will gets into the kids' world, this relationship becomes dangerous to her," says Margulies. (They got a small taste of that already, when a nervous Will ran into Zach at the office.) "When we open that door, all hell will break loose."
