An Aardman production (the people behind ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Chicken Run’) for Sony Pictures Animation, at last reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child’s question: ‘So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?’ The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic – a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns. ‘Arthur Christmas’ features the voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. The film is set for release November 11th in the UK, and November 23rd in the US.
How did you work on Steve’s voice in ‘Arthur Christmas’?
Hugh Laurie: It was just sort of experimentation. I had a fairly clear idea in my head when I first read the script of how he would sound like. When I read the script I thought I knew how it should sound, I could have been wrong, the director could have said, “No no, he’s Welsh and 30 years older,” (laughs) that’s always possible, but I had a fairly clear idea of the voice reading it. Then it’s just about experimenting a little bit, you try a bit of this and a bit of that, gradually you just sort of find it.
He’s a man that’s pretty certain of his place in the world and his abilities to meet what challenges come his way – which I must say is not a characteristic I share (laughs). But he definitely has that, he’s very confident, full of himself to a fault, but not in a terrible way, I think his hearts in the right place. He can be clumsy at times, but I think he means well, he’s one of the good guys.
The self-importance and confidence of Steve, how was that to play on?
Hugh Laurie: The self-importance, that’s always been a subject that has amused me, the…..I was gonna say the word jargonisation, but that in itself would be jargon (laughs). Turning any business operation, trying to make it sound bigger and better than it really is, trying to make every job sound more interesting, every objective sound loftier….that’s always amused me, the way all of us try to inflate the way we talk about our own work. And actors are probably guiltier of that than any other profession (laughs).
steve Hugh Laurie Interview For Arthur Christmas
I like Steve’s confidence, I don’t have so much of that I don’t think, not that I’m completely lacking, but I don’t have his version of it. He has this sort of self-belief, he truly believes in himself. That’s not something I have myself, it’s something I wish I did have, that sort of certainty. I think life would be very different if you had that certainty in your decision making.
Steve is slightly out of place in the Claus family.
Hugh Laurie: Yeah, it’s sort of odd because he’s a descendant of the line. He’s in the right place, inheriting this mantle of responsibility, but at the same time his attitude is slightly military baring, his gung-ho attitude to problem solving, it’s not quite in tune with the way most people would think of Christmas – the spirit of Christmas. He’s a moderniser, someone who’s trying to streamline everything all of the time, and in so doing, that alpha-maleness causes him to miss out a little bit.
The Claus Family, despite this one thing that’s peculiar about them, that they run Christmas, apart from that they’re very ordinary, they’re very recognisable, very real. Steve is definitely the one who has the impatience for the ramshackleness of this family, nonetheless they’re all very close.
Steve’s brother Arthur is completely the opposite…
Hugh Laurie: Yeah, Arthur is completely the other way. Arthur is a dreamer, he’s a much gentler and more whimsical…sort of hapless fellow. He understands and is much more in tune with what Christmas is about. They are two very different personalities. Источник
