What do you think?” Alan Cumming asked, reaching behind us to a tub of herbs in the restaurant window, rubbing some with his fingers then holding his hand to my nose. “Rosemary,” I said. Not for remembrance, Ophelia style—though Cumming has played Hamlet, “a long time ago.” He frequents this tiny East Village spot for its greenmarket-driven menu. “I’m a vegetarian,” he said, “though I do eat eggs and cheese sometimes. But I make a good vegan lasagna with soy cheese. Soy cheese melts really well.”

Who would expect cooking tips from the man who plays sharp-tongued, ruthless political fixer Eli Gold on the CBS drama “The Good Wife” — plays him so artfully that, after only a couple guest turns, he was snapped up as a series regular?

“I’ve wanted to do a TV series or film in New York, not to leave home,” said the Scottish actor, who lives in the East Village with his husband, illustrator Grant Shaffer, and their dogs, Honey, a Collie shepherd, and Leon, a chihuahua. Cumming also keeps a flat in London, “though I’m thinking of trading it for one in Edinburgh,” he said. “I think of London like I think of L.A.: Unless I have a job there, I don’t want to be there.”

Yet when his manager and agent pushed the initial “Good Wife” appearance on him, Cumming admitted, “I was a bit sniffy about it. I don’t have a TV — I have a physical TV, and watch DVDs — but no cable. But I read the first episode of ‘The Good Wife’ and thought it was great. The writing is wonderful — and 80 percent of the writers are women, which is great. It makes sense.”

Ironically, his “Good Wife” gig put an end to another New York opportunity. Cumming has long been in negotiations to play the Green Goblin in the beleaguered Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” But the series’ schedule forced him to bow out. So for the moment, he’s focusing on Eli Gold — and overcoming his fear of a plot that is still developing. “When you make a film, you can read what will happen to your character. On TV, you don’t,” Cumming said. “I was scared of that. Now I’m a regular, they speak to you about what will happen. And I’ve come to enjoy not knowing.”

He also gets a kick out of filming a series set in Chicago in midtown Manhattan. “The other day we were doing a scene in Eli’s office, and you could see the GE building out one window, so we had to move to another, where the buildings could pass for Chicago. But the best part of that scene was that Eli has a photo of himself with Barack Obama. They had transposed a photo of me into the frame.”

'The Good Wife' signs Bill Heck for guest role



Bill Heck has signed up for a role in the third season of The Good Wife.
The actor will play a Legal Aid lawyer on the CBS drama, according to New York Magazine.
The character will present an award to Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) for her pro bono work, with a "hint of attraction" developing between the pair.
Heck has previously appeared in episodes of NCIS, The Closer and CSI: NY.
He also recently starred in the Broadway revival of Angels in America and will make his Good Wife debut in October.

Other stars recently confirmed to be appearing on The Good Wife include Dazed and Confused's Parkey Posey, Source Code actor Michael Arden and Torch Song Trilogy's Harvey Fierstein.
