I mis-read the signs posted for the restrictions on use of ANY photography or video! The UPTOWN Theatre in downtown Napa had signs that read that usage of STILL PHOTOGRAPHY ONLY was allowed during the opening number ONLY, and at NO time during the entire performance was video to be shot.I thought I'd read it as video could be shot for some reason, so I flipped out my camcorder and had it held closely to my chest so not to bug anyone on the side or behind me, but one of the MANY roving ushers came over and stood directly in front of me - blackening the screen- and said to me, "Sir- you must put that camera away right now." More surprised that he'd referred to me as "Sir" than that I was being asked to put the camera away, I simply shut it off! Even though what I've captured is uneven, I like it because it was one of the more quite moments where we can see that Hugh truly loves his playing and how damn good he is. The entire show was a SHOW with 2 hours of a solid variety and uplifting bop, rattle and roar of very well played music that moves one's soul to joy.

TV’s Hugh Laurie charms Uptown audience with vintage New Orleans tunes
If you were the highest-paid TV actor in history, what would it take to make you sing the blues?
According to Hugh Laurie, it’s been a lifelong fixation.
During Laurie’s debut appearance at the Uptown Theatre on Tuesday night, he acknowledged several times the irony of a white, moneyed, very British thespian embracing this particular genre. Yet what became obvious during “An Evening with Hugh Laurie” was that the actor has a deep, long-standing, almost romantic relationship with the music of the American South in general, and New Orleans blues in particular.
Some in the sold-out crowd probably recalled Laurie as one-half of the comedy duo Fry and Laurie, partnering with Stephen Fry in the BBC shows “Jeeves and Wooster” and “A Bit of Fry and Laurie.” Even more, certainly, knew him as the star of TV medical drama “House,” which last week finished airing its eighth and final season.
A year ago he released a studio album, “Let Them Talk,” consisting of 15 blues covers by Laurie on piano and vocals, and featuring a handful of heavyweight collaborators including Sir Tom Jones and Dr. John.
To get a sense of Laurie’s stage presence as a musician, fans need only imagine the opposite of his abrasive TV character, Gregory House. The actor was charming, engaging and effusive in praising the members of his Copper Bottom Band — Jay Bellerose (drums), Kevin Breit (guitars), Vincent Henry (horns), David Piltch (upright bass) and Patrick Warren (keyboard/accordion), plus Jean McClain providing fabulous vocal support.
“Think of them as a Rolls Royce, while I am merely the silver-plated spirit of ecstasy on the hood,” Laurie said to laughter and applause. “Look at me — listen to them.”
Still, it would have been hard to ignore the frontman as he tore into songs like the folk classic “St. James Infirmary Blues” and Ray Charles’ “Unchain My Heart.” It’s a good thing Laurie chose the blues, because what other style could suit his voice so well? It’s more a warble than a croon, sometimes stretched thin, other times deep and resonant — not a beautiful voice by traditional standards, but a compelling one nonetheless. Luckily, blues music welcomes imperfect vocals as long as they’re delivered with feeling. And on that front, no member of the band held back.
Laurie prefaced many of Tuesday night’s songs with anecdotes and details about the artists who wrote, or first recorded, them. His breadth of knowledge on the subject points to years of study — a lifetime, even, as he hinted in a story about his eagerness to play “Swanee River” during childhood piano lessons. The performer self-deprecated in several instances, appearing to stop himself short of providing too much musical history.
“This is interesting to only four people in the world,” he quipped. “I can’t be sure one of them isn’t here tonight.”
Listening to him, one gets the sense that the songs were not picked so much as curated from among the NOLA blues canon.
Though he strapped on the guitar a couple times and took center stage occasionally for vocals, Laurie seemed most at home singing from the piano, especially during the aforementioned “Swanee River,” a 19th-century Stephen Foster “spiritual” that he played with wild abandon. Another highlight from the two-hour set was Laurie’s performance of early gospel tune “Battle of Jericho,” an eerily lit, crescendoing version that far surpassed the album recording. Yet another: “You Don’t Know My Mind,” which had audience members toe-tapping and swaying in their seats.
A lovely moment came with the slower James Booker song “Let Them Talk,” for which Laurie’s 2011 album was named. Laurie plays and sings a heartfelt cover with minimal backup, and the lyrics seem to sum up his relationship with this whole musical landscape: “I’m gonna keep on till the whole wide world knows / That I really love you, I really love you so.”
After a rousing, upbeat encore that had the audience finally on its feet, Laurie saluted Napa with a glass of whiskey before taking a final bow. On the surface, it would be easy to dismiss Laurie’s passion for this music as a pretension. After all, he was entered into the Guinness book last year as the most-watched leading man on TV as well as the highest-paid television actor per episode, and singing the blues is all about confronting melancholy and adversity — right?
But if any in the crowd had doubted the actor’s ability to pull off a blues set, then judging from conversations overheard on the way out, those doubts were put to rest.

Да, ладно вам, в зале будут охранники из коммерческих структур, а не менты участковые и гаишники уличные. Я лично с грубостью и хамством при запретах на съёмку не сталкивалась. Только что была на джазовом концерте. Херби Хэнкок приезжал. Переводчик был великолепный, весь концерт переводил.

Ведь могли быть сотни причин почему Хью в этот раз не смог пообщаться с поклонниками. В прошлом году он практически после каждого концерта минут по 10-15 раздавал автографы 
Вряд ли в этом году он бы отошёл от своей "политики".
