House boss prescribes romance for Huddy

If last month's House finale left any doubts that the Fox hit was moving forward with a romance between its title M.D. and his supervisor, Cuddy, the above image from the season 7 premiere -- featuring stars Hugh Laurie and Lisa Edelstein getting cozy on location in Malibu -- should erase them. "We're serious about this," insists series creator David Shore of the long-awaited coupling. "It's something that all network shows are leery about, but we had to do it. [Cheers] had to do it with Sam and Diane, and we had to do this."

However, Shore is quick to assure fans that House is not going to turn into a soap opera -- at least not on his watch. "it's not a soap opera," he maintains. "But there are relationships on the show. And if House and Cuddy have a fight, it's going to be about House's unique perspective on that. It'll also be about how it affects their ability to diagnose patients."

Shore also promises that the relationship will be far from obstacle-free. "Obviously things aren't going to be simple," he says. "Even in [the season opener], there are all sorts of hiccups." Case in point: Shore hints that all is not as it appears in the photo above. "What that [image depicts] is rather different from what you're going to experience when you watch the episode," he says. "It's not Beach Blanket Bingo.

Still, there's no discounting the fact that the development marks a major turning point for TV's most commitment-phobic curmudgeon. As Laurie points out, "even the appearance of happiness has taken some getting used to. I had a week of happiness training before the season started up, and I'm whistling more than usual." Edelstein, meanwhile, believes Cuddy is "ready to go for it... I think the final scene of season 6 makes that clear."

I agree that we've seen a lot of photos and descriptions of Huddy scenes, but we don't know how many minutes each scene takes up in the episode. I think Doris Egan (who wrote this episode) has said that scenes in TV shows are usually 1/2 to 1 1/2 minutes long (isn't that right?). We've seen photos and descriptions of these Huddy scenes (someone correct me if I'm wrong, and some of this may be my speculation about what I've seen/read):

* waking up (? sex)
* going to restaurant
* at beach
* attempt to enter concert venue
* suspected final scene outdoors of H/C discussion punctuated by
kisses, culminating in H/C walking away holding hands

You missed a scene or two there, but they were filmed on set.
Let me simply say that there are one or two Huddy scenes to add to your list. And, no, they haven't been spoiled yet, so I'll leave it at that. They aren't a very big deal, however.

House's seventh season will open with Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) acting like "a teenager in love skipping school," whisking Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) away for an idyllic day without the pressures of their hospital and her child, says House executive producer Katie Jacobs. "Anywhere other than Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital is an easier place for them to be together in a relationship," says Jacobs. "That's where we start — 'What if we only have each other?' As their day goes on, Cuddy will learn that the locales they visit hold a secret significance.

Naturally, the lovers can't avoid reality forever. "It would be impossible for Cuddy to spend every day as if her child and her professional life don't exist; a little easier for House, since he is somewhat of a child himself," says Jacobs. "But what's cool about Season 7 is that House is going to try to stay off drugs and have a meaningful relationship. We don't rush through this. It's taken six years to get there, so this is not a story that's going to be done in three episodes.

The true test will come in Episode 2, when the couple returns to work — where she's always on top. What happens, asks Jacobs, "when you're sleeping with your boss and she says 'No'?" As the season progresses, Huddy will toy with getting domestic — and try to do normal "couple" things with Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and Sam (Cynthia Watros), which could cause additional tension. "Will the four of them get along?" teases Jacobs.

As for the rest of the hospital staff, while Jennifer Morrison signed a deal to return for a few episodes as Cameron (at the producers' discretion), don't expect her to fill the slot temporarily vacated by Thirteen while Olivia Wilde shoots a film. Rather, a search is on for a new female doc, likely a romantic partner for one lucky surgeon. For Cuddy's sake, let's just hope this new addition isn't House's type.
