'Hamlet' and Leonard highlight Old Globe summer season The Old Globe is revisiting a titanic Shakespeare tragedy, and bringing back a top stage and screen actor for another Bard work, as part of its just-announced 2017 summer season.The Balboa Park theater also will stage a world-premiere piece commissioned from Ken Ludwig, the wide-ranging playwright behind the 2015 Globe hit “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.”Those three productions will join the previously announced revival of “Guys and Dolls” on the company’s summer slate.
The two-play Shakespeare Festival launches in June with the oft-overlooked history play “Richard II,” starring the Broadway veteran and Tony Award nominee Robert Sean Leonard, who was last at the Globe in 2013 as Henry Higgins in “Pygmalion.”The festival continues with the totemic “Hamlet,” to be directed by Globe artistic chief Barry Edelstein, a renowned Shakespearean who is taking on this most revered of the Bard’s tragedies for the first time as director.
“Richard II,” June 11 to July 15 (opens June 18): The saga of the rash, brash English king is not an easy one to stage: “It has a reputation for being kind of static and airless,” Edelstein says.
But he believes Leonard (a longtime friend of Edelstein’s) and director Erica Schmidt are the right team to breathe new life into the piece.
“You need a great director with an idea, and you need a great actor you can build those ideas around,” says Edelstein, who calls Schmidt “a very distinguished classical director with a vivid imagination.
“And the play needs it, because it’s a very rhetorical play” that “needs someone who can make it kinetic.”
Edelstein also appreciates the chance to have a female director take the helm: “Very few men are directing histories, because there’s this perception they’re hyper-masculine plays.”
As for Leonard (whose movie credits include “Dead Poets Society” and the 1993 adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”), Edelstein says: “He’s dashing and romantic and he’s got a sense of soulfulness to him.”

The complete cast and creative team have been announced for the Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park With George, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, that transfers to the Main Stem following an acclaimed concert at New York City Center.
Reprising their City Center performances are Tony Award nominee Brooks Ashmanskas (Mr./Charles), Tony Award nominee Phillip Boykin (Boatman/Lee), Claybourne Elder (Soldier/Alex), Liz McCartney (Mrs./Harriet), Tony Award winner Ruthie Ann Miles (Frieda/Betty), Jordan Gelber (Louis/Billy), Max Chernin (ensemble), Tony Award nominee Michael McElroy (ensemble), and Jaime Rosenstein (ensemble).
Joining the Broadway transfer are Jenni Barber (Celeste #2/Elaine), Mattea Marie Conforti (Louise), Erin Davie (Yvonne/Naomi), Tony Award nominee Penny Fuller (Old Lady/Blair), Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard (Jules/Bob), Ashley Park (Celeste #1/Waitress), Jennifer Sanchez (Nurse), David Turner (Franz/Dennis), and MaryAnn Hu (ensemble).
Julie Foldesi and Andrew Kober are swings.
As previously announced, the New York City Center production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park With George will re-open the historic Hudson Theatre (139-141 West 44th Street) for a strictly limited ten-week engagement. Directed by Sarna Lapine, performances will begin February 11 ahead of a February 23 opening night, for a run through April 23.
The production will feature set design by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt, projection design by Tal Yarden, costume design by Tony Award winner Clint Ramos, lighting design by Tony Award winner Ken Billington, sound design by Tony Award nominee Kai Harada, co-projection design by Christopher Ash, hair and wig design by Cookie Jordan, make-up design by Joe Dulude II, music coordination by Tony honor recipient Seymour Red Press, orchestrations by two-time Tony Award winner Michael Starobin, production supervision by Tony honor recipient Peter Lawrence, casting by Carrie Gardner/Stephen Kopel, technical supervision by Hudson Theatrical Associates, general management by 101 Productions, Ltd., musical staging by Ann Yee, and music direction by Chris Fenwick.

Sondheim and Lapine’s masterpiece, according to press notes, “follows painter Georges Seurat (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Consumed by his need to ‘finish the hat,’ Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot (Annaleigh Ashford), not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.”
