Gala’s delight at getting a bit more Fry and Laurie

- By Gillian Crawley

DECADES after their comedy double act was a must see on our TV screens, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie have treated a gala audience to a surprise performance of A Bit More Fry And Laurie.

The duo delighted VIP guests at London’s Roundhouse for the 2018 SeriousFun Children’s Network Gala on Tuesday night.

Sky sports presenter Natalie Pinkham who hosted the event, described Stephen, 61, as her “hero” and said meeting him gave her “wobbly knees”.

Stephen jokingly introduced Hugh, 59, who has gone on to Hollywood stardom in TV series House since the pair performed together in the 1990s in shows like A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster, by inviting him “back into the limelight after many years”.

They met through mutual friend Emma Thompson when they were all at Cambridge University.

The SeriousFun charity was set up by Hollywood star Paul Newman in 1988 to provide happier experiences to children living with serious illnesses and their families. There are 30 holiday camps and programmes in 50 countries around the world, always free of charge. More than a million young people have been helped.

Also at the event was Boy George, who got the audience on its feet with singalong versions of his Culture Club hits Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? and Karma Chameleon.

Actor Orlando Bloom spoke about the camps, saying: “When it feels like your luck has run out, you wonder how you’ll ever put the pieces back together again. That is when camp helps. SeriousFun treats the whole family – the parents, the brothers and sisters.”

Other guests included singer Tallia Storm and Clea Newman, daughter of Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward.
